Youichi Wada, the Square-Enix president, has hinted recently in an interview that the next generation of Final Fantasy games may no longer be single-console affairs.

Traditionally, Square had limited its support to the early Nintendo consoles, and more recently both PlayStation consoles, but they are already visably moving across the board. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released on the Nintendo GameCube, and with a sequel planned to be released on the Nintendo Revolution. A new release of Final Fantasy XI has been announced for the X-Box 360, and there will be as yet unnamed arrivals on the PlayStation 3.

In the future, it seems, we can expect more than just different releases on different consoles; it seems certain that Square will capitalise on the popularity of Final Fantasy and release their titles in a multi-platform, movie-licence-esque fashion.

Game Sage remains cynical about such a transition. Some Final Fantasy games which have been ported in the past have left a lot to be desired. On the other hand, this will open doors to those who cannot afford to buy each next generation console.

We shall have to wait and see!
